Crouching beside Cyd on the back porch of a cookie-cutter townhouse, Naomi watched her work on the door’s lock. They had tried two other places and so far were empty-handed. She hoped the third time was the charm. As Cyd nimbly worked the small, pick-like tools, Naomi was supposed to be on the lookout. Either everyone was hiding inside, which seemed unlikely, or the complex was deserted. Or the people were all dead, she thought with a shiver. Cyd warned her of the possibility they might find something messy, and Naomi had said she was okay with whatever, but… Let’s hope our luck in that regard continues.

She heard Cyd let out a quiet breath, and then the lock clicked open. Cyd glanced at her with a grin on her face, and Naomi smiled back. There was something about how easily the woman could break into places that excited Naomi. Almost sexy, she thought as her friend turned the door handle and paused. They waited and listened as Cyd insisted every time before pushing it open. A soft creak made Cyd freeze, and she let out a curse under her breath. Again, they waited, and Naomi had learned her friend was counting to some safe number in her head. Finally, Cyd seemed to think the coast was clear, because she motioned for Naomi to follow as she slipped inside.

The place felt deserted in Naomi’s opinion, but she followed Cyd’s example and tiptoed around the corner into a kitchen. Not a dirty plate, or a broken dish, or shred of trash dirtied up the space. “Hmmm,” Cyd said as she swept through the room and opened a cupboard. “Not sure I like the feel of this one.”

Naomi crept closer to peek. There were unopened cans of soup, corn, and peaches. “Why?” she asked. “This is what we are looking for, aren’t we?”

She watched Cyd furrow her brow. “Yeah,” she answered after a pause. “But let’s make this quick.” Pulling her backpack off her shoulders, Cyd unzipped a pocket and crammed the food into the opening. “Check the other cupboards. I’m going to see what’s upstairs.” Naomi slipped her backpack off to do what Cyd asked, but she didn’t like the idea of them splitting up.

“Cyd, are you sure?” she asked as she opened a cupboard. There was more food, and suddenly she felt suspicious too. Why would someone leave all this here? she wondered. Unless they were on vacation or something when it hit. That thought helped her relax a little. It was a perfectly logical explanation and she turned to tell Cyd, but the woman was already gone. As usual, she hadn’t made a sound. Naomi tried to ignore the uneasy feeling in her stomach as she loaded her backpack and moved to the next cupboard. It was beside the refrigerator and Naomi paused. If the family who lived here was away when the power went out, there would be spoiled things in the fridge. She reached for the door handle and braced herself for the smell that should roll out of the enclosed space.
